Although the term "Mechatronics" has been around for over 40 years and Mechatronic Art objects just as long...the term "Mechatronic Art" has not yet gone mainstream. This term has been defined by a DXARTS course as being a "systems based approach to the design and fabrication of functional experimental art devices. (It) Combines principles of mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering, software engineering, robotics and motion control, application of sensors, actuators, and other control devices." I began my exploration of Mechatronic Art in Ali Mazalek's Experimental Media class and am continuing my current project Grillwork, through her Synaesthetic Media Lab (Synlab).
